'''Note:''' I don't personally recommend the service for getting from the airport to Duke Tower.  Your flight could be late, you may have to wait for them to get to the airport, and it is only a few dollars cheaper than taking a taxi.  I do think it is a viable option for going from Duke Tower to the airport, as both you and the shuttle will be starting at Duke Tower. -- ''Dave C.''

Logistics

GMOD Americas 2011 was held at NESCent in Durham, North Carolina, United States.

Lodging

We recommend staying at Duke Tower, a hotel within walking distance of NESCent (~25 minutes). If you book by Friday February 18, we have reserved several rooms at the reduced rate of $75/night + tax (about $85/night total). Mention the code "NESCent GMOD" when you book the room.

Duke Tower is also within walking distance of Brightleaf Square (~10 minutes) and downtown Durham.

While Duke Tower provides most things, they don't provide shampoo, so bring your own.

There are also several other lodging options in the area.

Transportation

The closest airport is Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), a 30 minute drive from NESCent. A taxi from the airport to Duke Tower is about $40.

Duke Tower and NESCent both have free parking.

Getting from Duke Tower to NESCent

Every day a group will walk from Duke Tower to NESCent. It's about a 25 minute walk and it's reasonably pretty. If you want to walk with us, we will meet on the north side of Duke Tower, in the parking lot. We will depart at 7:45am sharp each day. At the end of each day, a group will walk from NESCent back to Duke Tower.

If you would rather take the shuttle, please call the shuttle at +1-919-323-1745, about 15 minutes before you want to go. The shuttle only holds 3-4 people at a time, and you may need to wait a while if several people (including non-GMOD guests) also need a ride. If a lot of people want to take the shuttle, we'll make arrangements in advance for the Duke Tower van to haul people.

Duke Tower Shuttle Service

Duke Tower has a free shuttle service that will take you to/from Duke Tower to anywhere in downtown Durham, NESCent, or the Duke University campus. They also offer an airport shuttle service for $35 for the first person, and $5 for each additional person. This must be booked in advance.

The shuttle operates 24 hours a day and can be reached at 919-323-1745.

Meals

Lunch will be provided on both days of the March 2011 GMOD Meeting, but at the Satellite Meetings - GMOD Americas 2011. Snacks and drinks will also be provided throughout the two days of the meeting. For other meals, NESCent is adjacent to Durham's 9th Street District, which offers dining options across the budget spectrum. If you are staying at Duke Tower, each unit has a full kitchen and there is a corner store and a Whole Foods nearby.

Sponsors

NESCent

GMOD Americas 2011 is sponsored by the US National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent). NESCent promotes the synthesis of information, concepts and knowledge to address significant, emerging, or novel questions in evolutionary science and its applications. NESCent achieves this by supporting research and education across disciplinary, institutional, geographic, and demographic boundaries.

Galaxy

The Galaxy Project is also sponsoring GMOD Americas 2011 events. Galaxy is a data integration framework that enables biologists to both analyze their data, and to archive those analyses (including data sets and program parameters) for future reference. Galaxy is developed at Penn State and Emory University.

GMOD Americas 2011 Flier

Help spread the word about GMOD Americas 2011 events by posting and distributing this flier, or the event announcements to your communities, mailing lists, and organizations.

There are many organizations out there that are struggling to cope with the volume of data that have and will continue to get in the future. GMOD is an excellent option for helping these groups get a grip on and exploit their data.
